Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Just 45 minutes away, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the capital of the Basque province of Basse-Navarre, stands on an important historical road between France and Spain, at the foot of the Pyrenees. The town is also one of the most important staging posts for pilgrims along the Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela, and is a compulsory stop before crossing the mountains.
The town is separated by the Nive river, which is spanned by an old paved bridge crowned by a pink sandstone tower. The delightful main street, which heads up to the citadel, is lined by houses from the 15C and 16C.
